Obituary of Richard "Dick" Barthel Granley

Please share a memory of Richard "Dick" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard “Dick” Barthel Granley November 25, 1943 – March 22, 2021 The family of Dick Granley is heartbroken to announce his passing on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the age of 77 years. Dick showed a life-long love for his community and his presence is a tremendous loss as he touched the lives of many. Dick’s life was a living example of his love for his family and sports. In honour of Dick’s dedication to the town of Mayerthorpe and his great passion for the sport of hockey, the Mayerthorpe Exhibition Centre was named Dick Granley Arena, where he had the opportunity and ability to coach, mentor and shape the lives of numerous children and adults alike. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his dear wife and companion of 56 years, Joan; children; Patty Granley (Pat), Todd Granley (Jennifer) and Jodie Granley; grandchildren, Kelly Granley (Dave) and Dylan Granley (Elissa); great- grandchildren; Aralex, Dante, Eladia and Abby; siblings, Loretta (Robert) Johner, Birdina (Randy) Baich and Jay (Candy) Granley, as well as by several extended family and many life-long friends. He is now eternally joined with his parents; Ellis and Alberta Granley; brother, Dennis Granley and grandparents, Jay and Kathleen Hicks and Sven and Berdina Granley. As a gesture of respect, the community is invited to gather outdoors at the Dick Granley Arena on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:30 p.m., in their jerseys and with hockey sticks in hand until the funeral procession has passed by. We ask that those participating practise all social distancing regulations as set forth. A private family service will be held at the Mayerthorpe Cemetery on Saturday, March 27, 2021 with Reverend Ruth Lotholz officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, those who are unable to attend are invited to visit www.affinityfuneralservice.ca where the service will be livestreamed. In lieu of flowers, Dick’s family has requested that memorial donations in his name be made directly to Mayerthorpe Minor Hockey Association or one’s sports association of choice. On behalf of the Dick Granley family, they would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their friends and family as well as the Mayerthorpe community for their love and support during these difficult days. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.affinityfuneralservice.ca Arrangements in care of Mykenna Cabral and Nonie Ouellet at: Affinity Funeral Service #1, 4015 41st Avenue, Whitecourt, Alberta, T7S 0A3 780.778.3330
