Merle is my Grandpa. He loved me from the day I was born, and he had a lot to do with raising me and making me who I am. I can never thank him enough for all the love, compassion and patience he showed me.
Grandpa always seemed larger than life, like he could do anything. It didn’t matter how strange a request you had, if you needed something made or built, he would figure out a way to make or build it.
It was Grandpa who brought about my love of horses, from the time I was a baby. He was always firm, but fair. You always get back in the saddle, and he seemed to live his life by that principle. He taught me how to ride, how to break a horse, how to live.
I have so many memories of him. He was my everything. For so many years, my world revolved around him. As a kid I’d always try to help him with his projects. I’d help paint the porch swings, or just be around him to learn what he was doing. He was always so involved with everything I did.
When my dog 4H club needed a space, he lent out the shop and cut all the wood so we could all make our own dog houses. When someone needed help with their animals, he was the first person they’d call. He was always there for the people that needed him, and the world’s light is a little dimmer with him gone.
There are a hundred thousand things I wish that I could tell him. A million conversations that I wish we’d had the time to have. I’ll never forget him, and I’m so lucky and so thankful that he was such a huge part of my life.
I’ll miss you, Grandpa. With all my heart.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Uncle Merle. My heart goes out to Auntie Sue and the boys.
I can remember when I met him the first time on one of our many family trips to Canada growing up. I remember being scared because he was so big and tall. But then he did that trick with his finger, and I laughed and we were friends after that. He told me not to pick my nose, because that's how he lost his finger. The stories he came up with about his finger were legendary. My mom told me later how he really lost it.
Anyway, the thing I remember most about Uncle Merle was his cowboy hat, mustache, and smile. He gave good hugs too. At my mom's funeral, he gave me a big hug. It felt like a father's hug. He was a big man, and this world will never be the same without him.
The reunion in heaven with my mom, grandma and grandpa was great, I'm sure. I look forward to seeing Uncle Merle again some day.

Merle Seely became my Dad’s best friend when they were young, a friendship that continued throughout their lifetime. He was a pillar to lean on for my brother and I, hence why he is considered our Uncle. Auntie Sue asked that I share some memories; it is my honour to do so; this is written for her.
My Dad and Uncle's stunts were endless, but a few stick out in my mind. They were driving down the road, and the steering wheel wasn't attached to the column for some reason. One was steering with a set of pliers, and the other was in the passenger seat, holding the steering wheel, waving at people, and laughing.
They were destined to be their own boss, and their creative problem-solving led to many grand plans. They started a construction company with minimal tools to their name. One of their first jobs was to hang a sign on the 2nd floor of a building. They did not own a ladder tall enough, so they figured that it could be accomplished by Uncle holding on to my Dad’s feet and hanging him out of a 2nd story window.
It seemed whenever you were doing something the wrong way, that was how he lost his finger. The stories we were told were always to make us think, what portion of the story is true, is it to make us laugh, or is it for us to learn from? It wasn’t until I was in my forties that I learned how he had lost his finger.
Don’t ask what was for dinner. Were we eating liverwurst, snake pate, bear, or was it beef? Uncle always believed that every child needs animals and the outdoors in their lives. For my 3rd birthday, he bought me a Shetland pony which he delivered in the back of a Datsun car.
Even as an adult in the years to follow, he was always just a phone call away. Especially after my Dad passed, and I needed fatherly advice. We purchased land to build a house, and he walked me through checking the soil and the trees to ensure our home was built in a great location. When I needed help moving an old Atco Trailer, Uncle came to the rescue. When my son was playing hockey in Drayton Valley, Uncle and Auntie came to watch, and he told people that he came to watch his Grandson.
As time passes and our individual lives take over, we do not have the time to see everyone that holds a special place in our hearts. I do regret not stopping in or calling as often as I should, but I will always cherish the great memories of my Uncle Merle.
His laugh… I wish I had recorded it.
In loving memory.

To the family of Merle Seely. I had the utmost pleasure of working with and getting to know Merle through our years at DC Energy Services. Merle always made me smile, had a good story to tell or was willing to listen to one of mine. He was a hard worker and a great mentor for the younger employees. Merle was one of those guys that knew a lot of just about everything. The friendship that we developed through work, carried on for many years and resulted in simply "bumping" into him around town. There was always a big burly hug that came at the start and again at the end of our visits. I will always remember his signature mustache. Words cannot describe how sorry I am for the loss to your family, he filled big shoes as it was always apparent to me that his family was his life. Time will soften the pain but the memories that he left will keep him alive in your hearts. This ball will live on called Earth is now minus one extraordinary man, but heaven has welcomed him with open arms and he awaits the welcoming of each and every one of you.

I remember when I was quite young we hung out at Uncle Merle’s often. One day Uncle Merle and Auntie Sue had bought the boys a new toy box. It was kind of egg shaped and Uncle Merle took turns putting us kids in it and rolling it back and forth across the floor. It was so much fun for us kids!! Wish I had pics of that day!!

There are so many memories when it comes to Merle where do I start. When I first met Merle I saw a rough tough cowboy ,outdoorsman and a little intimidating to be honest. But the more I got to know Merle I got to know the man under the cowboy hat. He had to be tough I watched him being dragged around a rodeo arena at the end of a rope with a wild horse at the other end. Or spending time with family and friends on covered wagon trips . Merle had a soft side I saw how he was with my kids laughing, playing, teaching them something about horses or outdoorsy stuff . He was pretty darn creative too. He could come up and make some of the coolest things .He was always thinking about how to fix this or that how this could be twicked to make it better ...just take a step back and watch and learn he was a man with a lot of knowledge. Merle was a special man and he will be missed .
