It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our lovely Auntie Irene. We were so fortunate to have Irene and Fred as active, present participants in our lives; always there if we needed them. We spent many years together camping at Mabel Lake, copious visits back and forth between Swan Hills, Barrhead, Whitecourt, Calgary, Christmas’s in the Pass and one Disneyland adventure. Of course there were many enjoyable stays at Freddy’s motor inn, where we got to sleep under the scary grizzly bear. We had fun times there, but also learned how to clean rooms, make proper beds and contribute where we could. They treated us as their children and we loved them as a second set of parents. How fortunate we were. They were patient with us, taught us card games, went on walks, rode in our boat big blue encouraging us, hung out on the beach, and laughed with us. They attended our weddings, loved our children, our dogs and were every part of our lives.
As we got older it got more difficult to see each other in person, but that didn’t mean our love lagged. Fred’s passing was a sad time for all, but of course mostly for Irene. Always in our thoughts, we were able to keep up with their lives and Irene’s after Fred’s passing, with phone calls and letters…yes…letters, remember those?
These past years and when Irene made the move to Mayerthorpe, it became more difficult to talk and write letters anymore, so thank goodness for her friend Elaine. Elaine kept us connected before the move and while she was at Mayerthorpe. This was appreciated so very much and we will never be able to thank her enough.
We know it was time Irene could finally join Fred, her parents, her brothers and one of her sisters, but we will still miss her very much. Safe travels Irene and say hello, with big hugs and kisses, to everyone up there for us.
Love from all the Ken Hammer family.
